Lesson Warmup consideration = TOK chunks from quality sample essays - Rohol lecture
NOTE - this is a sample of the TKPPF form due in December
&
Likely the same groups as yesterday.
OPEN DISCUSSION WITH OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CLASS DOING YOUR PROMPT Generally should record genius discoveries in your Google essay prep doc. Use as a guide:
UNPACK THE PROMPT ITSELF pt 1: List all the command verbs from the title & for each of the command verbs, explain in your own words what it requires you to do. & List & Define the key terms/Explain the significance of the key terms. Given your assessment of the key words, identify and list all of the assumptions and implications that underlie the statement or question in the title. (what are synonyms/antonyms for these terms (check a thesaurus), substitute new terms to replace them, which terms do you think need to be modified to suit your view of reality/knowledge, etc). SHOW YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSITION OF THE PROMPT. Can do some “If (x) means ____, then ….” type sentences/assertions with x being a term in the prompt.
UNPACK THE PROMPT PART 2: What is the essence (essential question) of this prompt in your own words? (If the prescribed title is not already a question, reword it in question form.) What, in your own words, do you think this prompt is expecting/requiring you to do? Identify any assumptions in the title. Do you agree/disagree with the prompt premise OR will you challenge/modify/defend/alter the prompt premise? Does the prompt present something as mutually exclusive or a binary system that is actually not like that (more complex, actually reciprocal, etc)... IN WHAT WAYS IS THIS PROMPT POORLY MADE OR OVERSIMPLIFYING OR MISREPRESENTING THINGS)
Explicit KQs in your title/prompt (try to reword them in your own language):
Implicit/unpacked/tangential KQs your title likely allows you to consider OR RELATED QUESTIONS TO ASK:
Which AOKs (can explore “disciplines” in place of AOKs in some instances) are well suited for this prompt? Defend/explain your choices.
What aspects of IB’s knowledge framework should be addressed with this prompt (scope, motivation and applications, specific terminology and concepts, methods used to produce knowledge, key historical developments, interaction with personal knowledge)? Is shared vs personal knowledge definitions relevant with this prompt (see TOK course guide)? Should WOKs be addressed & How?
What are your assertions or lines of argument for this prompt? Write the closest thing to a thesis you think you should take with this prompt. What is a cogent point of view to take on this prompt? What is a personal viewpoint you can take on the prompt and persuade people to see? (or finish the sentence) I want to argue that…
Explain how you could collide unexpected people, job fields or AOKs with this prompt (LINK & SYNTHESIZE in clever ways) or What are some divergent perspectives or interesting careers/jobs/POVs this prompt could get you to:
What are the implications (anticipatable, negative, positive, unintended but problematic) of taking the position your prompt seems to be taking with this prompt?
WHAT ARE YOUR Fresh, original examples you could use with this prompt (RLSs). You can ID which AOKs the examples reside in. (can just list examples/RLSs in the left column but should be able to do the entire row)
- Personal examples are allowed. Use/consider CAS/EE/other courses. Consider non-human species examples. Consider other parts of the world. Consider other time periods. Indigenous.
TOMORROW... WE’LL DO YOUR GROUP’S BEST WALK THROUGH OF WHY YOU SHOULD AND HOW YOU SHOULD WRITE A TOK ESSAY ON THAT PROMPT (why you should write on this prompt, most obvious pitfalls of this prompt, your best claims or core position to take with this prompt, best RLSs/evidence, which AOKs you should do OR avoid, best way to do prompt unpacking or what embedded KQs are in your over prompt, questions about your prompt to ask the entire class, how scope / motivation and applications, perspectives, tools/methods used to produce knowledge, ethics are relevant to your prompt, etc). EVERY MEMBER OF THE GROUP SHOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. Likely 5-10 minutes per prompt. YOU CAN REQUEST SCREEN CONTROL TO SHOW YOUR PREP DOCUMENT or Google Slides TO THE CLASS (if you have one).

Consider if your prompt relates to any of these:
1 = 2016 Q1 “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.” Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.
2 = 2016 Q6 “In knowledge there is always a trade-off between accuracy and simplicity.” Evaluate this statement in relation to two areas of knowledge.
3A = 2014 Q3 “Knowledge is nothing more than the systematic organisation of facts.” Discuss this statement in relation to two areas of knowledge.
3B = 2015 specimen 3 = “There is no reason why we cannot link facts and theories across disciplines and create a common groundwork of explanation.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
4 = 2014 Q6 “A skeptic is one who is willing to question any knowledge claim, asking for clarity in definition, consistency in logic and adequacy of evidence” (adapted from Paul Kurtz, 1994). Evaluate this approach in two areas of knowledge.
5 = 2016 Q2 “Knowledge within a discipline develops according to the principles of natural selection.” How useful is this metaphor?
6A = 2013 Q1 In what ways may disagreement aid the pursuit of knowledge in the natural and human sciences?
6B = 2017 Q5 Given access to the same facts, how is it possible that there can be disagreement between experts in a discipline? Develop your answer with reference to two areas of knowledge.
7) “In order to find out how things really are, one must understand the filters through which one perceives the world.” Discuss and evaluate this claim. (M04)
8) Is knowledge in mathematics and other Areas of Knowledge dependent on culture to the same degree and in the same ways? (M05)
9) “Tell me how you’re conducting your research and I’ll tell you what you’re looking for.” To what extent do the methods used in different Areas of knowledge determine the scope of the research and the conclusions you can reach? (M06)
10) Sometimes we hear reasoned arguments that oppose a view to which we are emotionally committed; sometimes we hear a passionate plea for a view we have good reason to reject. Bearing this in mind, discuss the importance of reason and emotion in distinguishing between belief and knowledge. (M06)
11) If education means learning to see through the clichés of one’s time, how does learning in the different Areas of Knowledge and in TOK contribute to this education? (M06).
12) Discuss the ways in which value judgments should and should not be used in different Areas of Knowledge. (M07
13) Is it an oversimplification to claim that some Ways of Knowing give us facts while others provide interpretations? (M04)
14) “Seek simplicity, and distrust it” (Alfred North Whitehead). Is this always good advice for a knower?
15) “In expanding the field of knowledge we but increase the horizon of ignorance” (Henry Miller). Is this true?
16) Compare and contrast our approach to knowledge about the past with our approach to knowledge about the future.
17) “The knowledge that we value the most is the knowledge for which we can provide the strongest justifications.” To what extent would you agree with this claim?
18) As an IB student, how has your learning of literature and science contributed to your understanding of individuals and societies? (M2012)
